It has been just over a year since we released our write up of our interview with the amazing Aunty Blue (which you can read here). Not only was it one of our favourite pieces to write, it was also one of the most fun and insightful chats we have been blessed to have with a group of artists. Which is why it brings us such great joy to listen to their two new tracks and hear them maintain their alluring brand of dreamy folk as well as their development as songwriters.
In Raising Our Kids + Forgive Yourself see the wholesome and sentimental lyricism that Aunty Blue have showcased throughout their past discography displayed perfectly. Kim's voice is given centre stage in Raising Our Kids as the backing instrumentation is woven in and out at a very controlled pace. There is a very mature sense of resraint and release throughout this track. With the rise in dynamics perfectly matching the more emotional resonant lines of lyricism. However this rise is only given out in small fragments throughout, as if they are teasing a final crescendo. The softly played (in vocals and other instruments) act as a perfect formula to allure listeners in before an explosive pre chorus.
Forgive yourself maintains the excellent lyrics, however there is more of a focus on the percusive elements. The strong rhythm section is the personal highlight, with the drum fill and matching bass line kicking of the song in a much different fashion than Raising Our Kids. Rhythm is not the only stand out aspect of this track, there is a strong melodic guitar line that makes itself known to the listener intermittently before a final explosion with a simply incredibly guitar solo that is both techincally proficient and emotive.
While the technical aspects of their songwriting remains to be top notch, by far the biggest take away from these singles (as well as the rest of Aunty Blues discography) is their sincerity and ability to be vulnerable. There is a reflective quality to the story of the songs that invite listeners to look deep down into themselves whether the lyrics personally relate to them or now. It is hard to ignore such raw emotion.
We are so thrilled to hear the amazing strides one of our favourite bands have made and cant wait to see what the future holds for them.
