Sitting down and writing out all of your thoughts and goals can be very confronting and just plain hard. Unfortunately, lots of ideas and inspiration can be fleeting and never fully contextualised. So, when promoting and attempting to share with the rest of the world what we intend to accomplish it can prove to be quite the task. In a way that’s what Couchdog is all about. As creatives it can seem near impossible to properly share with the world your exact vision but hey half the fun is trying. As a collective we want to aid as much as we can to help you express those ‘fleeting moments of inspiration’. Whether it be via interview, blog post, art shows/gigs and even a feature video, we want to keep an inclusive community of artists connected and motivated.
So, what is a Couchdog? We all know the stereotype of the ‘starving artist’. An individual whose creative pursuit is more important than all else. The couch surfing hippie. The broke busker. A Couchdog. This concept has positive and negative connotations and as a collective we want to re contextualize what being a creative person means. Breaking the notion that creation has to be done in isolation and that well-being has to be put second to what we make. It does not have to be a solo endeavour. Life in general is far more enjoyable and exciting when shared with others with varying viewpoints and backgrounds. We want to give people a chance to share what their art means to them and use it as a tool to promote and entice collaboration. With all that being said there is an aspect of the ‘starving artist’ that we wish to keep in the Couchdog ethos. The commitment to expression no matter our personal circumstance. The inability to say no to that urge inside of you that wants to make something personal and imaginative. We like to think we all have a little Couchdog inside all of us.
We are incredibly blessed to in Melbourne a city with a thriving arts community filled with a diverse array of performers. With such a strong scene to work within we are incredibly excited to find our own space within the cities creative sphere. Helping others participate and giving equal opportunity for individuals to express themselves.
