There are many lifelong goals for artists. Some are as simple as just having the time to write your own music. Others are larger. Touring, supporting renowned acts, playing festivals and even just being able to jam with your friends. Perhaps one of the biggest musical fantasies is packing your bags and venturing out into the world armed with only your instruments and desire to test yourself out on the road. Sunday Lemonade (Tyson & Loz) are living this fantasy and have been doing so tirelessly for the past few years. Evolving from a two-guitar folk act to what they are today. We managed to chat with them both as they spent some time back home in Melbourne/Naarm in between constant tours and working self-sufficiently as artists.
The musical journey of Tyson and Loz began before Sunday Lemonade. A former member of the extremely melodic and calming band The Midwayers, Tyson was already accustomed to performing in a collaborative environment. His partner in crime Loz was also an established solo act. Playing a more intimate singer songwriter style of emotive heartbreak songs. With their combined experiences both members of Sunday Lemonade bring together their own history with writing together to create what they call Super energetic, in your face, folky fun.
The beginnings of the duo were described as an experiment. One van, some instruments, and a destination of Byron Bay for a show. During their time in Byron the pair began busking. However, busking in Byron is far more chaotic and competitive than your regular town. This situation was a test for Sunday Lemonade. A baptism by fire. How would they demand the attention of those passing by when other buskers could be found on every corner? It did prove to be exhausting. According to Sunday Lemonade it really pushed them forward and forced them to broaden their performance.
The addition of percussion was cited as a huge turning point of the band. Tyson has always dreamed of being a drummer in a band and through process of adding more bits of percussion over time he has now through coincidence found himself in that very setting. Trading the second guitar for a rhythm section elevated Sunday Lemonades musical style. Giving it a more upbeat and funky edge to their already established catchy vocal melodies and emotive lyricism. This sound has captured the heart of attendees at brewery’s, cafes and even now festivals around various part of the country as both Loz and Tyson’s travels have led them out past the streets of Byron and back into their van.
In terms of the day-to-day operations of the band, both members do all the admin work. Keeping their website, social media, and gig calendar constantly up to date. This is tireless work for any artists but the ability to have a balance on maintaining your online presence while touring the country requires high levels of dedication. From a writing perspective it was interesting to hear that a lot of Sunday Lemonades writing is still done separately, at least in the early/conception stages. Tyson recalls often playing around with chord progressions before bringing the ideas that sticks over for collaboration. This allows for a singular idea to conceived more independently before bringing it together to add that Sunday Lemonade flare.
As time has passed Sunday Lemonades song writing has become even stronger. With their latest release Runaway showcasing the chemistry and talent between Tys and Loz. An upbeat ode to the exciting life they have built together on the road. However, it is their previous single See You Sometime that really highlighted to us their impressive development as songwriters. The track is about saying goodbye but not for good, just for now. How embarking on a journey can lead to these goodbyes more often. As much as this applies to both members of Sunday Lemonade and their current lifestyle it was written years ago by Loz as a solo piece. Not only does its meaning stay current with Sunday Lemonade but coincidentally the release date too. Unbeknownst to the pair as they were releasing it the new Sunday Lemonade rendition of Loz’ track was released to the world on the 31st of August. The same date as it was originally released years ago. This little coincidence not only makes for a fun back story but also speaks to the cyclical nature of creating art. A song made a long time ago finding itself new relevance and new sounds, standing as a landmark of how these two incredible artists have evolved yet stayed true to the roots of their passion.
